(8th century B.C.) Hebrew prophet of the Exile whose vision of the majesty, holiness, and glory of God took possession of his spirit. He speaks of our world not as a “cut stump” but rather as “springing anew from the stump of Jesse.” His prophecy of Emmanuel is of “God-near-us,” the spirit of wisdom and insight, counsel and power. He leads us into the mystery of suffering through his image of the Suffering Servant who says, “Here I am, Lord, send me”— forgetting himself to act on behalf of all and bring us into the center of God’s great love.
