Jesus’ Table: Welcoming the Unprepared
While at St. Gregory’s, Rick Fabian and Donald Schell led the congregation pioneering the practice of Open Communion in the Episcopal Church. Around the church most who have adopted this practice explain it as ‘radical hospitality’ and welcoming all to the table. The All Saints practice was based on imitating Jesus’ prophetic sign of radical grace, which signaled its scandalous welcome not just of stranger, but of well-known unworthy and unrepentant sinners at God’s messianic feast. Fabian and Schell are working on articles and a book that will argue for this alternate Biblical and theological basis for open communion and tell the stories of what difference it has made in conversion and formation in the mission setting of drastically unchurched San Francisco.
