Presiders’ Workshop:  Sharing Authority With the People

December 3, 2008 @ 9:30 - 4pm

Location: St. Aidan's, San Francisco

imageWhat practices can we develop as presiders that will make the people’s Great Thanksgiving truly theirs?

This workshop, new this year, is specifically for those who preside in the Sunday liturgy and who want to create a stronger sense of congregational engagement and participation in the liturgy.

We will focus on these central questions:

  • How do we prepare to pray this prayer?
  • How do we initiate a real dialog with the people and how do we lead their prayers and speak to God in a voice that speaks for the whole congregation?
  • How do we pay attention our voice and body without making our presiding a theatrical performance?
  • How can we get feedback on our work as presiders?
  • How can we develop a lay and clergy leadership team for liturgy so that readers, cantor, deacon and other congregational leaders are supporting one another?
  • How does sharing authority in the liturgy enhance the priest’s authority AND the people’s experience of being effective human beings with real agency in the church and in their daily lives?

  • As in all of our All Saints Company workshops, the Presiders’ Workshop will be heavily experiential.  We will all take part in praying and in making Eucharist together.  We will reflect on our present experience and practices presiding and how we want to challenge ourselves to grow in skill and integrity leading the congregation’s public prayer.
