Liturgy Grows In New China

April 13-27, 2009

Nanjing, China

The fast-growing Church in China invites us to share our liturgical worship with them.  Join All Saints Company during Eastertide 2009 as we visit the Nanjing Union Theological Seminary.  Along with a group from St. Gregory of Nyssa Episcopal Church we will welcome our hosts into St Gregory’s rich and participatory liturgy --first as St. Gregory’s practices it in San Francisco, and then with local ethnic music and dances.  We will meet young Chinese seminarians and learn about today’s Christian mission in Chinese style.  We will tour the storied and fascinating cities of Nanjing, Shanghai, Suzhou, Xi’an and Beijing in ways few tourists can do.

LEADERS
The trip will be led by Philip Wikeri and Rick Fabian.  Philip is Acting Dean and Professor of World Christianity at San Francisco Theological Seminary, who served two decades in China as Executive Director of Amity Foundation (China’s oldest NGO).  He was ordained a Pastor of the Chinese Church by Bishop K.H.Ting, who has led the Chinese Church from Communist Liberation through the Cultural Revolution until today.  Philip knows both the Chinese nation and church intimately.  His wife Janice accompanied him there, and today serves the Chinese University of Hong Kong as a scholarly translator. The couple have published Bishop Ting’s letters and sermons, and Philip’s magisterial biography of Bishop Ting appeared in 2008.

Rick Fabian graduated summa cum laude from Yale in Chinese Studies, was ordained to serve as Yale’s Episcopal Chaplain, and founded St Gregory’s Church at San Francisco in 1978, drawing on worldwide Christian traditions.  His lifetime collections of ancient and modern Chinese painting and classical furniture have been exhibited at museums in San Francisco and Honolulu, occasioning symposium lectures and catalog essays by leading voices for Chinese history and culture.

PARTICIPATION
Participation will be limited to 12 group members, facilitating an intimate connection with Chinese seminary life.  The trip is open to anyone who has an interest in cross-cultural dialogue and who is willing to participate in St. Gregory-style liturgies at the seminary.
