All Saints Company looks to places and times where faith is expressed popularly in ways that reinvigorate and renew our own leadership in faith communities with very different contexts. This coming January we are leading a pilgrimage to the sacred sites of Ethiopia during the festival of Timkat (Epiphany) the largest religious festival of the year.
Ethiopia is one of the last places on earth where ancient Christian culture and contemporary Christian practice flow together almost seamlessly. In the city of Lalibela, and in Axum, where the Ark of the Covenant is said to rest, faith is practiced like eating and breathing; it is everywhere. We will immerse ourselves in that world, traveling to the monasteries around Addis Ababa, celebrating Timkat with the Patriarch of Ethiopia, traveling to the holy cities of Lalibela, Axum, and Gondar. Along the way we will be speaking with and learning from lay and ordained Ethiopian Christians, and we will be given instruction by experts in iconography and church history.
Our pilgrimage will be guided by Yemi Fantahun, an Ethiopian Christian and tour director, and long-time friend of All Saints Company who has led several of our past pilgrimages to Ethiopia. The pilgrimage will include time for spiritual reflection and prayer together, as well as time for exploration and sightseeing.
The makeup of the pilgrimage group of 20 will be gathered half from our All Saints Company network and half from networks of African American Christians. This rich gathering promises to focus our attention and conversation on the way our various ethnic and spiritual heritages find resonance in this ancient and indigenous form of African Christianity, and how we appropriate it into our own contexts.
