Music that Makes Community is a practice of singing that has been central to music making for centuries; without the use of books or screens, this practice transcends labels like contemporary or traditional.
Music That Makes Community Kitchener, Ontario, Canada is designed specifically for music directors, organists, clergy and lay leaders of the church who want to learn how to lead music effectively without the use of hymnals or other printed materials. This important musical tradition can both enhance existing music programs and aid the development of new ones within participants’ churches and communities.
Participants will learn, practice and lead this musical tradition to support healthy theology and build community through the gift of more direct interaction between people in the liturgy. Our time together will be both practical and theoretical. Participants will learn the skills involved in selecting and leading “paperless” music, and will have ample opportunity to practice these skills. We will also spend time discussing the role of this type of music in the church and its potential to effect congregational transformation. See this music being taught in video clips from previous Music that Makes Community events.
This event is co-sponsored by St. Peter's Evangelical Lutheran Church and the Diocese of Niagara. The practice intensive will draw together leaders from around the country to explore paperless music in an environment of mutual learning. Lunch (included in the registration fee) will be provided for each full day.
